pH adjustments
If pH test results are high, usually above 7.0 for most plants, we generally recommend adding elemental sulfur to bring it down. Sulfur is relatively slow acting and may take several months to produce the needed pH but can be safer then the acids or aluminum sulfate. Typically a high pH can bind up needed micronutrients such as zinc, copper, and iron so a temporary micronutrient mix may be applied until the pH is corrected. The rate to apply sulfur is simple, 8 lbs of sulfur per 1000 ft2 to bring pH down by 1 unit. The formula we follow is (Current pH – Needed pH) X 8lb= lbs Sulfur to be applied per 1000 ft2.
